What is Rosa’s Story?

Rosa’s Story is an audio-novella developed as an educational tool to offer diabetes information to Latinos with type 2 diabetes.  Using brief, conversational stories, Rosa’s Story conveys important messages about diagnosis, prevention, blood glucose control, nutrition, medications, exercise and coping with the emotional aspects of diabetes. The diabetes information presented in the audio is complemented by an accompanying handbook for the patient or listener that provides more details about managing diabetes.

Why do you use audio and printed materials in Rosa’s Story?

Rosa’s Story was developed based on the findings of a comprehensive clinical research study that assessed educational preferences within the Latino community. This study concluded that Latinos/Hispanics with type 2 diabetes who were exposed to a combination of written and audio materials utilizing a story-telling method, developed for this particular population, were more likely than those exposed to traditional printed education materials to recall general information about diabetes self-care practices and to implement behavioral changes.
